The Pacific Coast Highway has long been celebrated as one of the world’s great scenic drives, but experiencing it firsthand reveals something even more profound. Recently, my friend Sandy and I traveled a stretch of Northern California’s iconic coastline, following the Pacific Coast Highway south from Half Moon Bay toward Santa Cruz and beyond in search of new photographic discoveries.

As the journey unfolded, I became increasingly aware of the meditative quality of the landscape. The rhythm of the road, the ever-changing coastal light, and the continual presence of the Pacific Ocean created a sense of calm and quiet wonder. Photographing along this remarkable corridor became less about reaching destinations and more about immersing ourselves in the experience of seeing.

The coastline offers an extraordinary diversity of subjects—sweeping beaches, sculpted dunes, sea stacks, hidden coves, rugged cliffs, and weathered agricultural landscapes that meet the sea. Each location possesses its own distinct character, yet together they form a visual tapestry that feels both timeless and deeply connected to the natural world.

Among the many places explored during this journey were Martin’s Beach, Pigeon Point Lighthouse, San Gregorio Beach, Wilder Ranch, Fern Grotto Beach, Natural Bridges State Park, Jalama Beach, Morro Rock, Point Lobos, Bonny Doon Beach, and numerous coastal farms that quietly define the character of this storied landscape.
