Jasper National Park is the largest park in Canada’s Rocky Mountain Region. Every part of nature can be found here-lakes, mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, streams, rivers, and even an icefield. Jasper is a virtual paradise for outdoor, nature and landscape photographers. As amazing as this place is, what was even more notable is how being in Jasper made me feel. Jasper made me feel an unbelievable sense of gratitude, thankfulness for being in a place so beautiful, so pristine and so accessible. Unfortunately, my sense of gratitude turned to despair just a few weeks later after we returned to the U.S. and learned that the Jasper Complex Wildfire had caused devastating damage to the town of Jasper and a large part of the surrounding forest. The fire burned over 81,000 acres, the largest wildfire in Jasper in over 100 years. It took firefighters 48 days to get the fire under control. In the end, 358 out of 1,113 structures were destroyed, 5000 residents and 20,000 tourists fled.

The town of Jasper and it’s beautiful park need you. Please visit Jasper National Park. The forest is recovering, the town and community are recovering, but need your continued support. You will not be disappointed when you visit Jasper National Park’s iconic lakes like Maligne Lake, Medicine Lake, Pyramid and Patricia Lakes, and others. When you arrive, you’ll find yourself staying hours capturing the many vistas at each lake and enjoying their peaceful beauty from lakeside, off trail and from the mountainside. Be sure to visit during sunrise and/or sunset, the sun’s angle of light at these times creates a wonderful palette of warm tones and lights up the mountain sides with amazing texture and color. Also visit Athabasca Glacier and Falls, and Sunwapta Falls. These are all grand scale natural wonders whose size, energy and power you’ll want to capture in your images. For all these locations plan to visit during off peak times to avoid crowds. Bring your tripod, remote or wired shutter release, circular polarizer and neutral density filters for long exposures.
